Hello ! Welcome to the Village of Holt, the Village is situated in the North Wales region of the United Kingdom, it is a small Village, but holds an important position as the gateway from Cheshire (England), to (Wales.) Holt is in the County Borough of Wrexham. The dividing line is the River Dee which is the border divide. Crossing from one country to the other is by the Old Dee Bridge, this Bridge goes back many hundreds of years, Photographs of the Bridge, and of our Village, are linked at the bottom of the page.
The Village goes back to Roman times, and many examples off the Roman occupation have been found in the surrounding countryside, Farming is one main industry, but the biggest is Horticlture, and the biggest part of that is the growing of Strawberries. The Strawberries have been grown for many many years, and still are today, but the industry of years ago as now faded away, Strawberries where then sent all over the United Kingdom from our small Village. Today's Strawberries are mostly grown for the Pick Your Own trade along with Raspberries and other Summer fruits.
The most prominant building in the Village is St Chads Church, this stands proud as you enter Holt from Farndon, the English side of the river. Farndon village is the closest neighbouring village to Holt, but Farndon village is in England.There is another crossing of the River, this is the new bypass bridge, but very modern compared with the old bridge. A new bypass was opened in 1986 after our village was gridlocked with very heavy traffic for many years, and the cost of damage to the old bridge was enormous. Our village also has a Castle, but today it is only a ruin, but it is very historic, I have pictures on the other pages of how it looked then & now.
